AI traffic is website visits that arrive from AI assistants and answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot, when a user clicks a link or citation inside the AI's answer. In GA4 it appears under the AI Assistants channel (medium ai-assistant). Also called LLM referral traffic.
AI traffic (or LLM referral traffic) is the slice of your visitors who found you inside an AI answer and then clicked through to your site. It sits next to organic search, direct, and social as its own acquisition source.
What counts, and what gets missed
Google Analytics 4 has a native AI Assistants channel. When the referrer matches a recognized assistant, GA4 sets the medium to ai-assistant and files the session there. Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode are the exception: those clicks route through Organic Search, not AI Assistants, so the channel really measures standalone tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Deepseek, and Grok.
Two things distort the count. First, the channel needs an intact referrer, so assistant clicks that arrive without one (common from mobile apps and in-app browsers) fall into Direct, and real AI traffic runs higher than the channel shows. Second, the volume is lopsided: one analysis of 6.77 million sessions across 166 GA4 properties found ChatGPT drove 92.4% of trackable LLM referrals. For assistants GA4 does not map yet, add a custom channel with a regex like perplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|you\.com.
The upside is quality. AI referral visits more than tripled between late 2024 and late 2025 (Similarweb), and this traffic tends to arrive pre-qualified: one dataset clocked ChatGPT visitors converting at 7.1%, close to paid search and ahead of most other channels.
How it affects your traffic
For most sites AI traffic is still a single-digit share of visits, but it is one of the fastest-growing sources and it converts above the site average. The catch is that you only earn it when AI systems quote and link your pages, which is a different job from ranking ten blue links. Winning it means being structured, citable, and factually clean enough for models to lift you into an answer, which is the core of an AI SEO engagement.
