Authorship
Also called: author entity, author markup
Authorship is the practice of attributing web content to a real, identifiable person with a verifiable track record, using bylines, author bio pages, and Person structured data so search engines and AI systems can connect the content to a credible author entity.
From Google Authorship to author entities
Google once ran a formal program: starting in 2011 you could add rel="author" markup to claim a byline and get your photo shown in results. It retired that program on August 28, 2014, with John Mueller citing low adoption by authors and little measurable value to searchers.
What replaced it is quieter but more durable. Google’s people-first content guidance asks whether it is “self-evident to your visitors who authored your content,” and recommends bylines that link to real background about the author. That feeds the “Who, How, and Why” self-check and E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness), which human quality raters apply when judging a page.
On the technical side you signal authorship through Article, NewsArticle, or BlogPosting structured data. Google’s stated best practices: put only the name in author.name (no titles or publisher), use type Person (not the generic Thing), and add author.url or sameAs so Google can tie the byline to one consistent author entity.
"author": {
"@type": "Person",
"name": "Willow Lane",
"jobTitle": "Journalist",
"url": "https://example.com/staff/willow-lane"
}
The name in markup, the visible byline, and the linked bio should all match. That consistency is what lets both Google and AI answer engines resolve a scattered byline into a single, recognizable source.
How it affects your traffic
Authorship signals rarely move rankings on their own, but they compound the trust signals Google's raters and AI answer engines weigh, which matters most on YMYL and expertise-heavy pages where thin, anonymous content stalls. Getting it right means consistent bylines, genuine author bio pages, and Person schema wired into every template, all of which is on-page work. Our On-Page SEO service bakes a clean author entity into the page structure so your best content is attributable to a person that Google and AI engines can recognize and cite.
