A backlink index is the record of the backlinks a search engine has discovered, crawled, and stored. A link only influences rankings after Google crawls the page it sits on and keeps that page in its index; links on pages Google never crawls, or drops, pass little or no signal.
Google finds links by crawling the page they live on, then decides whether to keep that page. Discovery is not the finish line. Google’s own documentation is blunt: “Indexing isn’t guaranteed; not every page that Google processes will be indexed.” If the page hosting your link is thin, orphaned, or buried on a rarely crawled domain, Googlebot can leave it stuck as “Discovered - currently not indexed,” and a link sitting there does little for you.
What decides whether a link counts
Three factors move a backlink into the index:
- Crawl priority of the linking domain. Sites that publish often and hold authority get crawled frequently, so a fresh link there can register quickly. A low-traffic property can take much longer.
- Quality of the linking page. Spun, machine-translated, or thin pages get deprioritized (Ahrefs).
- Internal linking to that page. A link on an orphan page, with no internal links pointing to it, may never be recrawled.
You can check status by pasting the exact linking URL into Google with a site: prefix, or inspecting it in Search Console. Do not panic early. A new link can take a week or two to register, and non-indexation only becomes a real problem after that window. The lever you actually control is placement: a link on a page Google already crawls daily is worth more than ten links on pages it ignores.
