Buyer's journey
Also called: buyer journey, customer journey
The buyer's journey is the process a person moves through before buying: Awareness (naming a problem), Consideration (comparing solutions), and Decision (choosing a provider). In SEO it is the frame for mapping content and keywords to the search intent behind each stage.
The three stages, and why they matter for search
HubSpot popularized the three-stage model as the backbone of inbound marketing. Each stage lines up with a different kind of query:
- Awareness: the buyer is naming a problem. Queries are informational, like
why is my site not ranking. - Consideration: they compare approaches. Queries get comparative:
seo agency vs freelancer, best on-page seo tools. - Decision: they pick a provider. Queries turn commercial:

Map one page to each intent and you cover the whole journey instead of only the bottom.
The catch: the journey is not a tidy funnel. Google’s “messy middle” research found people loop between two mental modes, exploration (expansive, adding options to a consideration set) and evaluation (reductive, narrowing them), often many times before buying. In Google’s own words, the loop is their “best attempt at describing the non-linear nature of the messy middle.” So one visitor may read your awareness post, jump to a comparison, leave, and return to a pricing page weeks later.
For SEO this means breadth plus internal links: enough pages to answer each mode, wired together so a returning visitor can go deeper on their own schedule. Sites that only publish decision-stage pages miss the earlier searches where trust gets built, and hand the visitor to whoever showed up first.
How it affects your traffic
Most sites over-index on decision-stage pages and starve the awareness and consideration searches that feed them, so they only capture people already ready to buy, a small slice of total demand. On-Page SEO fixes this by matching each page's title, headings, and body copy to the exact intent behind its stage, then linking the stages together. Applied across the whole journey, it grows non-brand traffic at the top and routes that traffic down to the pages that actually convert, instead of leaving early-stage searchers to a competitor.
