Content quality
Also called: high-quality content, helpful content
Content quality is how well a page satisfies a searcher's intent with accurate, original, and useful information versus competing results. Google evaluates it through people-first signals such as first-hand experience, depth, and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T), not word count or keyword density.
Google does not score quality with a single number. Its automated systems approximate the judgments trained human raters make, guided by a public list of self-assessment questions. The ones that carry weight: does the page offer original information, reporting, or analysis? Does it give a complete description of the topic, or just skim the obvious? Is it written or reviewed by someone who demonstrably knows the subject? Does it have easily verified factual errors? Would you trust it enough to bookmark or share it?
What sits underneath
The framing is E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness). Google is explicit that trust is the most important member of that set, and that experience, meaning first-hand knowledge from actually using a product or visiting a place, now sits alongside expertise.
One point people miss: Google judges the content, not the tool that produced it. Text drafted with AI can rank if it shows real expertise and value, and text written by a human can fail if it is thin and derivative. Word count is not a quality signal, and neither is keyword density.
Example: two pages target “best running shoes for flat feet.” One rewrites three other blogs. The other adds wear-test photos, mileage notes, and a review from a podiatrist. The second one demonstrates experience and depth, which is exactly what Google’s core updates reward and what AI answer engines tend to cite.
How it affects your traffic
Weak content is the most common reason on-page work stalls. Google's core updates suppress pages that are thin, duplicative, or fail the self-assessment questions, so those URLs lose rankings and stop earning AI Overview and ChatGPT citations. Lifting content quality (real depth, first-hand experience, clear expertise) is the core lever in any on-page SEO engagement and usually the fastest way to move organic traffic. Our On-Page SEO service audits each page against these signals and rewrites what is holding it back.
