Why depth signals importance

Google finds most pages by following links from pages it already knows. Its documentation describes discovering a new URL “when Google extracts a link from a known page to a new page,” for example a category page linking to a fresh post. A page buried many clicks away from anything Googlebot visits regularly is slower to find and slower to recrawl, and it competes for a limited crawl budget against every other URL on the site.

Depth also carries a relevance signal. In a Google Webmaster hangout, John Mueller said the number of slashes in a URL does not matter, but the number of clicks does. If a page is one click from the homepage, that tells Google “these stores are probably pretty relevant,” while pages that take multiple clicks are “a lot harder for us to understand” as important.

Measure depth by shortest path, not folder nesting. A URL like /blog/2024/03/post/ can still sit at depth 2 if the homepage links to a hub that links to it. Flatten depth with hub pages, breadcrumb navigation, contextual internal links, and clean pagination so key pages stay within a few clicks. Watch for pages that no internal link reaches at all (orphan pages). Crawlers cannot walk to them, so they depend on sitemaps alone and often go unindexed.
