E-A-T
Also called: eat seo, expertise authoritativeness trustworthiness, EAT
E-A-T stands for Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness, a set of criteria from Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines used to judge content quality. In December 2022 Google added a fourth E for Experience, so E-A-T is now the older three-part name for what is now called E-E-A-T.
From E-A-T to E-E-A-T
Google’s quality raters use these criteria to gauge how much they can trust the person or site behind a page. The three original pillars: Expertise (does the creator actually know the subject), Authoritativeness (is the creator or site a recognized source on it), and Trustworthiness (is the page accurate, honest, and safe). In December 2022 Google added Experience, the value of firsthand knowledge such as actually using a product or visiting a place. Of the four, Google says trust is the most important; the others feed into it.
One thing people get wrong: E-A-T is not a switch you can flip. Google is explicit that rater data is not used directly in its ranking algorithms. Raters check whether algorithm changes are moving results in the right direction. What ranks is the mix of signals that tend to line up with good E-A-T, like clear authorship, citations, and a track record on the topic.
E-A-T carries more weight on YMYL pages (Your Money or Your Life): topics touching health, finances, or safety, where a wrong answer can hurt someone.
If you still see “E-A-T” in an audit or a content brief, read it as shorthand for the same idea, just missing the Experience E that Google bolted on in 2022. The practical work behind it did not change.
How it affects your traffic
Most E-A-T signals live on the page itself: named authors with real credentials, an about page, inline citations, accurate and current claims, and clean structure. Anonymous, thin pages struggle to rank for anything competitive, and they get filtered hardest on YMYL topics where Google leans on trust. Building those signals into your templates and copy is on-page work, which is exactly where our On-Page SEO service focuses. Get the trust signals right and existing content can start ranking for terms it currently cannot touch.
