An HTML sitemap is a normal web page that lists links to a site's pages in an organized, human-readable layout. Unlike an XML sitemap (built for crawlers), it is built for visitors, giving them one place to navigate and giving crawlers an extra path to a site's internal links.
HTML sitemap vs XML sitemap
The two share a name and almost nothing else. An XML sitemap is a machine file that lists URLs plus metadata for crawlers. An HTML sitemap is a page your visitors can open, usually linked in the footer, laid out like a table of contents.
Google’s own sitemaps guidance says you may not even need a sitemap if your site has 500 pages or fewer and is well linked, and it stresses that all important pages should “be reached through some form of navigation.” John Mueller has gone further, saying HTML sitemaps “should never be needed” and that a clear navigational structure should take precedence. So an HTML sitemap is a supplement, not a fix.
Where it earns its place:
- Large catalogs where a menu cannot hold everything
- Orphan pages that no menu or footer links to
- Legacy sites that cannot auto-generate an XML file
- Sites with no on-site search
The real SEO value is internal linking. Every link on the page is a crawl path and a small transfer of authority to the target, which helps deep pages get discovered and re-crawled. It does not set crawl priority the way people often assume, and it will not rescue thin or duplicate pages from being ignored.

An HTML sitemap moves traffic in two small ways: it gives crawlers a clean path to pages buried too deep for the main menu, and it spreads internal link equity to those pages so they get indexed and re-crawled.
