An internal link is a hyperlink that points from one page to another page on the same website (domain). Internal links let search engines discover pages, pass ranking signals between them, and use the anchor text to understand what each linked page is about.
Google treats an internal link as three signals at once. The crawler follows it to find URLs (“Other pages are discovered when Google extracts a link from a known page to a new page”). The link graph passes ranking signals along it. And the anchor text tells Google what the destination page is about.
How Google uses internal links
Two rules from Google’s own docs do most of the work. First, a link only counts if it is a real <a> element with an href; text styled to look clickable, or a button wired up in JavaScript that never renders an <a href>, is not crawlable. Second, “every page you care about should have a link from at least one other page on your site.” A page with no internal links pointing to it (an orphan page) is hard for Google to find and rarely ranks.
Anchor text matters too. Google says good anchor text is “descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant,” and warns against generic “click here” or “read more.” A post about technical audits that links out with the anchor technical SEO audit reinforces that page’s topic far more than a bare “learn more.”
Internal links differ from external links (backlinks), which come from other domains, but both flow through the same PageRank machinery. That is why internal linking is not a nice-to-have: it decides which of your pages Google can reach and how authority spreads once it gets there.
How it affects your traffic
Links you earn from other sites only lift the pages they land on, unless internal links carry that authority onward to the pages that convert. A campaign that ignores internal structure leaves much of that value stranded: new backlinks pile up on the homepage or one blog post while your money pages stay orphaned and uncrawled. Routing that authority (and Googlebot) to the right pages is part of a disciplined link building program, not an afterthought.
