link gap

Also called: backlink gap, link intersect, backlink gap analysis

A link gap (or backlink gap) is the set of referring domains that link to one or more of your competitors but not to you. Link gap analysis finds them, surfacing sites already willing to link in your niche as a ready-made list of link-building targets.

The mechanics are simple. Tools like Ahrefs Link Intersect and Semrush’s Backlink Gap take your domain plus a handful of competitors (Semrush compares up to five, Ahrefs up to ten), then subtract your referring domains from theirs. What is left is the gap: domains that link to rivals but have never linked to you.

The raw list is noisy, so filter before you act. A typical pass keeps:

Overlap count is the tell. A domain that already links to four of your five competitors clearly covers your topic and links out freely, so once it knows you exist, the odds it links to you are high. Those go to the top of the outreach queue.

The output is not a backlink; it is a qualified prospect list. You still earn each link with a real reason to be cited: a resource, a data point, a comparison, an interview. Link gap analysis just tells you where to spend that effort instead of pitching cold into the void.

How it affects your traffic

Every referring domain your competitors have that you lack is authority working against you on the exact queries you both target. A link gap analysis converts that into a punch list: the specific sites most likely to link to you, ranked by authority and relevance. Our link building work starts here, we build the gap list, qualify it, then earn those placements through outreach rather than buying junk. Closing the gap on domains that point at competitors' money pages compounds authority where it moves both classic rankings and AI-search citations.
