MozRank

Also called: moz rank, mozrank score, mR

MozRank is Moz's link popularity score, a 0 to 10 logarithmic metric modeled on Google's PageRank that rates a page by the quantity and quality of links pointing to it. It is a legacy metric, largely replaced in Moz's own tools by Domain Authority and Page Authority.

MozRank (often written mR) came out of Moz’s original Linkscape/Mozscape link index. Every page on the web got a score, and a page passed a slice of its own MozRank to the pages it linked to, so a link from an mR 7 page counted for far more than one from an mR 2 page. That recursive, link-flows-to-links design is exactly how Google’s original PageRank worked, which is why Moz built it as a public stand-in.

Because the scale is logarithmic, the gap between scores widens as you climb. Going from 3 to 4 takes a handful of decent links; going from 6 to 7 can take thousands. Moz paired it with MozTrust, a sibling metric that measured how close a page sat to a set of trusted seed sites, closer to the TrustRank idea than to raw link count.

Is MozRank still used?

Treat it as historical. When Moz rebuilt its link index in 2018 it dropped the MozRank passed fields (lmrp, lmrr) from the API and retired Open Site Explorer in favor of Link Explorer. The headline link metrics today are Domain Authority (DA) and Page Authority (PA). If a tool still shows a “MozRank” number, it is usually re-deriving an old-style score, not a value Moz officially maintains. Either way it was always a third-party estimate, never something Google reads directly.

How it affects your traffic

MozRank, Domain Authority, and Page Authority are all proxies for one question: does the web's link graph vouch for your pages? Google never reads Moz's numbers, but it weighs the same underlying signal, quality editorial links from relevant, trusted sites. Chasing the score itself is a trap; you raise it (along with your rankings and your odds of being cited in AI answers) by earning real links, which is the core of our Link Building work.
