outbound links

Also called: external links, outgoing links, external link

Outbound links (also called external links) are hyperlinks on your page that point to a page on a different domain. They cite the sources your content relies on and signal to readers and search engines which sites you trust. Google treats them as normal citations, not a direct ranking boost.

Outbound links do two jobs. They send your reader somewhere useful, and they tell crawlers which entities your page associates with. Google’s John Mueller has said that linking out to other sites is not “specifically a ranking factor,” so do not add external links expecting a rank bump. The value is indirect: citing original research or a primary source backs up your claims and supports the trustworthiness part of E-E-A-T.

Most links need no rel attribute. Google only asks you to qualify a link when it is paid, user-created, or untrusted:

<a href="..." rel="sponsored">paid / advertising</a>
<a href="..." rel="ugc">comment / forum post</a>
<a href="..." rel="nofollow">untrusted, don't vouch for it</a>

Since 2019 these are hints, not hard directives, and you can combine them (rel="ugc nofollow"). A common myth is that linking out “leaks” ranking power. It does not. Link equity is shared across every link on a page, and a normal editorial link to a strong source is fine.

Practical rules: link only when the destination genuinely helps the reader, use descriptive anchor text (not “click here”), point at the primary source rather than a page that only cites it, and use a plain link (no attribute) for editorial citations you stand behind.

How it affects your traffic

Outbound links are a small but real on-page signal, and getting them wrong is common: unqualified paid links can read as a link scheme, and pages that cite nothing look low-effort to both Google and AI answer engines. Our On-Page SEO work audits every external link on a page, tags paid and UGC links correctly, and adds citations to primary sources so your content earns trust in classic rankings. Well-cited pages are also the ones LLMs tend to quote, which is where a growing share of high-intent clicks now start (AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity).
