user acquisition
Also called: user acquisition report, GA4 user acquisition, first user source
User acquisition is the GA4 report showing how new users first found your site or app. It groups people by their First user source, medium, and channel using first-touch attribution, so every later visit stays credited to the channel that first brought them in.
GA4 ships two acquisition reports that read almost the same and answer different questions. User acquisition is scoped to new users and reads the First user source / medium / default channel group dimensions. Traffic acquisition is scoped to sessions and reads the last-touch Session source / medium.
Example: someone finds you through Organic Search, then returns ten more times by typing your URL. User acquisition keeps all eleven sessions under Organic Search, because it credits the first touch. Traffic acquisition shows one session under Organic Search and ten under (direct). Read User acquisition to judge which channels bring in genuinely new audiences; read Traffic acquisition to judge session-level performance.
Where AI search shows up
As of 2026 the report mirrors how people actually find sites. Organic Search now counts arrivals from Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, and a separate AI Assistants channel captures referrals from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, and similar tools. If you want to know whether AI answers are sending you first-time visitors, the First user channel breakdown is where that signal first shows up, often before it registers as a ranking or a click in Search Console.
How it affects your traffic
Your User acquisition report is the fastest read on whether search is actually delivering new people or just recycling visitors you already had. If Organic Search and AI Assistants stay flat while Direct climbs, the cause is usually upstream: crawlability, thin or mis-targeted pages, weak internal links, or content AI engines will not cite. An SEO Audit traces those first-touch numbers back to their technical and content causes, so you fix what is capping new-user growth instead of guessing from a chart.
