10x content

Also called: ten times content, 10X content

10x content is content built to be ten times better than the best result currently ranking for a target keyword or topic. Coined by Rand Fishkin (Moz, 2015), it sets the quality bar for content that earns links, rankings, and attention once merely good content became commonplace.

The idea is competitive, not absolute. You do not grade 10x against a fixed checklist. You grade it against whatever page sits at the top of the SERP for your target query, then aim to beat it by a wide margin on usefulness, depth, and experience.

What actually makes content “10x”

Fishkin’s criteria cluster into a few tests. Does the page cover the topic more completely and accurately than the current number one? Is the user experience (layout, speed, visuals, mobile) clearly better? Does it bring original data, analysis, or a perspective competitors lack? Does it earn an emotional reaction and, as a result, shares and links? He notes you rarely hit all of these; three or four is usually the signal.

A worked example: the top results for project management templates are thin lists of five downloads. A 10x version might ship 40 categorized templates, each with a filled-in sample, a short how-to, and one-click copies for Notion, Sheets, and Excel. Same keyword, an order of magnitude more utility.

This maps onto Google’s own guidance. Its self-assessment asks whether a page offers “substantial value when compared to other pages in search results” and a “complete, or comprehensive description of the topic.” 10x content is a practical way to answer yes to both. The same depth-and-originality bar increasingly governs whether AI answer engines cite you instead of a competitor, since they draw on similar best-answer signals.

How it affects your traffic

Chasing 10x content is how you win keywords where the current top pages are already decent. Instead of publishing another average post that stalls on page two, you audit what ranks, find the gaps, and build a page that is measurably more useful, better structured, and faster. That is on-page work: title and heading structure, internal links, schema, media, and topic depth pull together to make the page the obvious best answer. Our On-Page SEO service does exactly this, rebuilding your priority pages to outclass the current leaders and hold rankings that thin content cannot defend.
