Topical authority

Also called: topic authority, topical authority seo

Topical authority is how far a search engine treats your site as a complete, trustworthy source across an entire subject, earned by covering that topic in depth and consistently rather than publishing one-off pages. Google does not name it as a ranking factor, but its guidance rewards the same signals.

Google has never confirmed a ranking factor called topical authority. Its documentation gets close: the helpful-content self-assessment asks whether a site would be seen as well-trusted or widely-recognized as an authority on its topic, and whether a page offers a substantial, complete, or comprehensive description of the topic. So the term is practitioner shorthand for signals Google clearly values, not an official metric.

How it gets built

The common playbook is topic clusters: one pillar page covering the broad subject, plus cluster pages answering narrower questions, all internally linked so crawlers can read the relationships. Two dimensions have to work together. Breadth means you cover the major subtopics; depth means each page actually answers its question. Semantic SEO layers on entity coverage, naming the people, tools, and concepts a real subject-matter expert would reference.

For example, a plumbing site does not rank as an authority on “water heaters” from one page. It ranks by covering tankless versus tank, sizing, installation cost, common faults, and maintenance, each as its own linked page.

The 2024 Google Search API leak surfaced fields that practitioners read as topic-focus signals, such as a site-focus score and a measure of how far content strays from the core subject. That is suggestive, not confirmed, so treat off-topic sprawl as a risk rather than a proven penalty.

How it affects your traffic

Topical authority is why one well-optimized page often loses to a competitor that owns the whole subject. Scattered posts do not compound; a linked, complete cluster does, and it can lift every page in the group at once. It also shapes AI visibility, since AI Overviews and assistants tend to cite sources that cover a topic thoroughly. Our On-Page SEO work builds that structure by fixing internal links, filling subtopic gaps, and tightening entity coverage so search engines and AI systems read your site as the expert on its subject.
