above the fold
Also called: the fold, above-fold
Above the fold is the part of a web page visible in the browser viewport before any scrolling. In SEO it matters because that space shapes the first impression, usually holds the Largest Contentful Paint element, and is where Google expects to find real content rather than stacked ads.
The phrase comes from print newspapers, where the top half above the physical fold carried the headline. Online, the fold is the bottom edge of what a visitor sees before scrolling.
Where it touches SEO
Two places. First, Google’s page layout algorithm (nicknamed “Top Heavy,” launched January 19, 2012) can demote pages that load the top of the screen with ads and bury the actual content. Google’s own line: the change does not affect sites that place ads above the fold “to a normal degree,” only those that “go much further to load the top of the page with ads to an excessive degree.” It affected less than 1% of searches globally, but the principle stuck: primary content belongs up top.
Second, Core Web Vitals. web.dev defines Largest Contentful Paint as the render time of the largest image, text block, or video “visible in the viewport,” so your above-the-fold hero or headline is usually the element LCP measures. That makes it the wrong thing to lazy-load. Set fetchpriority="high" on the hero image and reserve loading="lazy" for what sits below the fold.
The fold is not a fixed pixel line. It shifts with screen size, so a hero that looks fine on desktop can push your H1 off a phone screen. Check the layout at several viewport widths and keep the headline, a plain description of the page, and one clear action visible without scrolling.
How it affects your traffic
A weak above-the-fold zone costs you twice: visitors bounce before they read anything, and a slow hero image drags your LCP toward "needs improvement," which can soften mobile rankings. On-page SEO work fixes both at once, ordering the first screen so the headline, intent match, and a clear action land immediately, and making the LCP element paint fast. If your top pages pull impressions but thin clicks or short dwell time, the fold is the first place to look.
