On-page SEO

on-page SEO

Also called: on-page optimization, on page seo, onpage seo

On-page SEO is the practice of optimizing elements on the page itself (the content, HTML tags like the title and headings, images, and internal links) so search engines and readers can clearly tell what the page is about and rank it for the right queries.

On-page SEO covers everything you control inside a single page, which sets it apart from off-page work like link building and from technical SEO that handles crawling, indexing, and site speed. The goal is to make a page’s topic unambiguous to both people and the systems that rank it, including AI answer engines that now lift passages straight from pages.

What you actually optimize

Google’s own guidance is plain about the highest-leverage pieces. Write a <title> that is “descriptive and concise” and unique to the page, and skip keyword stuffing where “the same words or phrases appear multiple times.” Give each page a meta description that is “short, unique to one particular page, and includes the most relevant points.” Use descriptive anchor text on internal links so readers and crawlers know where a link goes, and add alt text that “explains the relationship between the image and your content.”

One point that surprises people: Google says heading order does not affect rankings and there is no ideal number of headings. Use <h1> through <h6> for structure and readability, not as a ranking lever.

A worked example: a page targeting “running shoes for flat feet” should carry that phrase in the title, answer the question in the first paragraph, use headings for the sub-questions (arch support, top picks), name images running-shoes-flat-feet.jpg, and link out to related guides with plain anchor text. Content quality sits underneath all of it. None of the tags rescue a page that does not answer the query.

How it affects your traffic

On-page fixes are usually the fastest organic wins because they touch pages Google already crawls, so a tighter title or a first paragraph that answers the query can lift click-through and rankings within a crawl cycle rather than months. The same clean structure feeds AI search: answer engines pull well-labeled passages, so pages built to rank in Google also tend to get cited in AI Overviews and ChatGPT. Our On-Page SEO service audits titles, headings, internal links, and content depth page by page, then rewrites the ones bleeding impressions into missed clicks.
