Ahrefs Rank
Also called: AR
Ahrefs Rank (AR) is Ahrefs' global leaderboard that orders every website in its database by backlink profile strength, effectively by Domain Rating. The site with the strongest dofollow referring domains holds AR #1, so a lower AR number means more link authority.
How Ahrefs Rank works
AR is a derived metric, not a raw score. Ahrefs takes Domain Rating (its 0 to 100 measure of a backlink profile’s size and quality) and sorts every site in its index from strongest to weakest. The result is one ordered list: the top site holds AR #1, the next holds #2, and so on down through hundreds of millions of domains. When Ahrefs published its explainer, Facebook held #1, Twitter/X #2, and YouTube #3.
Two properties matter in practice. First, AR is relative. Your position can slip even if your own link profile never changes, because other sites keep earning referring domains and pass you. Second, the scale is lopsided. Near the top, climbing a single rank takes an enormous volume of quality links, since the sites ahead are giants. Near the bottom, one dofollow link gained or lost can swing you past hundreds of thousands of domains, so AR is noisy for small sites.
One caveat Ahrefs states plainly: Ahrefs' Rank has nothing to do with your Google rankings or search traffic. It does not feed the algorithm. Treat AR as a scoreboard for link authority, useful for tracking your trajectory against competitors over time, not as a ranking factor you optimize directly. If you want a single number to watch, DR is easier to read; AR is the tie-broken ordering behind it.
How it affects your traffic
Because AR is just Domain Rating sorted across the whole web, you only climb it by earning more and better dofollow referring domains than the sites around you. A rising AR means your link-earning is outpacing competitors; a flat or falling one means they are out-building you. AR itself is not a Google ranking factor, but the link authority it tracks does correlate with what ranks, so a deliberate Link Building program is how you move the profile that sits underneath the number.
