backlink
Also called: inbound link, incoming link
A backlink is a link from one website to a page on another site (also called an inbound or incoming link). Google uses links both to discover new pages and to judge relevance and authority, which makes backlinks one of the strongest off-page ranking signals.
What makes a backlink count
Google reads a link only when it is a real <a> element with an href attribute; script-driven pseudo-links usually get skipped. The visible anchor text tells Google what the target page is about, so a link reading “vegan protein powder” passes more topical context than one reading “click here.”
Not every backlink carries the same weight. Testing at Ahrefs points to the authority of the linking page, topical relevance, on-page placement, and whether the link is followed or marked rel="nofollow". A followed link from a related, established site does more than a footer link from an unrelated one.
The flip side is risk. Google’s spam policies define link spam as creating links “primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings,” and name buying links, excessive link exchanges, and automated link building as violations. Paid or sponsored placements are acceptable only when qualified with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" so they pass no ranking credit.
One nuance for 2026: Ahrefs research finds referring domains still correlate strongly with rankings on competitive queries, while the link signal has weakened for low-volume, long-tail terms. Backlinks matter most where competition is real, which is exactly where they are hardest to earn.
How it affects your traffic
Backlinks decide whether your pages can compete for the high-volume, high-intent queries where the SERP is already crowded. Two sites with similar content and technical health often split on referring-domain strength, and the one with more relevant, followed links usually takes the position that drives clicks. Links also get new URLs discovered and crawled faster, since Google follows them to find pages. Earning those links safely, without tripping Google's link-spam policies, is the job of our Link Building service.
