Amazon SEO

Also called: Amazon A9, Amazon listing SEO, Amazon listing optimization, Amazon product SEO

Amazon SEO is the practice of optimizing product listings (titles, bullets, descriptions, backend search terms, images, and reviews) so they rank higher in Amazon's own search results. Amazon matches a shopper's query to relevant listings, then orders them mainly by how likely each is to convert into a sale.

How Amazon ranks a listing

Amazon does not publish its algorithm. Sellers call it “A9” (after A9.com, the search unit Amazon once ran) and the newer, engagement-weighted version “A10,” but Amazon has never officially confirmed either name. Salsify notes the real shift with A10 was adding external signals that do not originate on Amazon, such as off-site traffic and social mentions, on top of the internal sales-and-keyword signals A9 already used.

What Amazon does say in its own seller guidance: put researched keywords in the title, bullets, description, and backend search terms; keep titles readable (product type, brand, key attributes); and enter backend terms in lowercase, separated by spaces, with no repeats.

Two forces set your rank. Relevance: the listing text has to match the query, since a listing that never uses the words a shopper types cannot surface for them. Performance: click-through rate, conversion rate, sales velocity, review count and rating, price, and in-stock availability all tell Amazon whether a click becomes a satisfied purchase.

Example: a “stainless steel water bottle 32oz insulated” listing needs those attribute words in the title and backend search terms, plus real sales and reviews, to beat a keyword-stuffed page nobody buys.

Unlike Google SEO, there is no link graph to lean on. Your levers are the listing content and the demand you can drive to it.

How it affects your traffic

Amazon is a search engine your buyers use before Google, and a poorly built listing simply never surfaces no matter how good the product is. Our e-commerce SEO work treats your Amazon listings and your own store as one demand system: keyword-mapped titles and backend terms to win the query, plus the off-Amazon traffic (Google rankings, AI answer citations) that the A10-era algorithm now rewards. Fixing listing relevance and conversion signals together is usually the fastest lift for a stalled product line.
