Accept-Language header The Accept-Language header is an HTTP request header a browser sends to tell the server which natural languages and locales the user prefers, ranked by optional quality (q) weights. Servers use it for content negotiation and confirm the chosen language with a Content-Language response header.
Amazon SEO Amazon SEO is the practice of optimizing product listings (titles, bullets, descriptions, backend search terms, images, and reviews) so they rank higher in Amazon's own search results. Amazon matches a shopper's query to relevant listings, then orders them mainly by how likely each is to convert into a sale.
availability schema Availability schema is the availability property inside a product's Offer in Schema.org structured data. It tells search engines whether the item can be bought, using a fixed value such as https://schema.org/InStock or https://schema.org/OutOfStock.
BigCommerce SEO BigCommerce SEO is optimizing a store built on the BigCommerce platform so its product and category pages rank in Google and get cited by AI answer engines. It combines the platform's built-in controls (SEO-friendly URLs, automatic 301 redirects, XML sitemaps, product schema) with standard ecommerce SEO work.
category description A category description is the SEO copy on an e-commerce category (product listing) page that explains the product group, who it is for, and how to choose. It gives search engines unique text to rank a page that would otherwise be only a grid of product links.
category page SEO Category page SEO is the practice of optimizing an ecommerce category or collection listing page (a PLP) so it ranks for broad, high-intent head terms like "running shoes" instead of leaving that demand to individual product pages.
ccTLD A ccTLD (country-code top-level domain) is a two-letter domain ending tied to a specific country, like .de for Germany or .fr for France. It sends Google a strong signal that a site is meant for that country, which is why stores use ccTLDs to geotarget international markets.
collection page A collection page is Shopify's term for an ecommerce category page that groups related products into one browsable listing. It sits between the homepage and individual product pages, and often ranks for broad, high-intent shopping keywords.
content localization Content localization is adapting a page's language, keywords, currency, imagery, and cultural references for a specific market, not just translating the words. In SEO it pairs with locale-specific URLs and hreflang so search engines serve the right regional version to each user.
Content-Language meta tag The Content-Language meta tag (<meta http-equiv="content-language" content="en">) signals a page's intended audience language. It is non-conforming (obsolete) in HTML and Google ignores it for language detection, making it a weak SEO signal. Declare language with the html lang attribute and hreflang instead.
country targeting Country targeting is the practice of signaling to search engines that a page or site is meant for users in a specific country, so it surfaces for searchers there. Google infers the target from signals like ccTLDs, hreflang, server location, and localized content, not a manual setting.
currency localization Currency localization means showing product prices (and number formatting) in the visitor's local currency instead of one default currency. For SEO, Google reads local currency as one signal of a page's intended country audience, so it works best on separate locale URLs tied together with hreflang.
discontinued product SEO Discontinued product SEO is how you handle the URL of a product you will never sell again: keep it live marked as discontinued, 301 redirect to the closest live equivalent, or return 404/410 so engines drop it. The right call depends on the page's links, traffic, and whether a real replacement exists.
ecommerce SEO Ecommerce SEO is the practice of optimizing an online store so its product, category, and faceted pages both rank in search and convert shoppers. It spans technical crawlability, on-page content, and structured data like Product markup that lets listings show price, availability, and ratings.
faceted search Faceted search (also called faceted navigation or filtered search) is an e-commerce interface pattern that lets shoppers narrow a product listing by attributes, or facets, such as price, brand, size, and color. Each selection filters the results and usually generates a distinct URL for that combination.
free product listings Free product listings (also called free listings or "surfaces across Google") let e-commerce products appear at no cost across Google surfaces like Search, the Shopping tab, Images, Lens, YouTube, Maps, and Gemini. They run through a Google Merchant Center product feed, not paid Shopping ads.
geolocation redirect A geolocation redirect automatically routes visitors to a different URL or content version based on the country detected from their IP address. Google advises against forcing these redirects: its crawlers mostly request from US IPs, so an IP rule can hide your other regional pages from being crawled and indexed.
Google Merchant Center Google Merchant Center is a free Google platform where online retailers upload and manage product data (title, price, image, availability, GTIN). That feed powers both paid Shopping ads and free product listings across Google Search, Images, Maps, YouTube, the Shopping tab, and Gemini.
Google product category Google product category (google_product_category) is a product feed attribute that assigns an item to a value from Google's predefined product taxonomy. Google auto-assigns one to every product in Merchant Center, and you submit this attribute to override that classification for Shopping ads and free listings.
Google Shopping Google Shopping is Google's product-search surface where retailer items appear as visual listings with image, price, and seller. It spans the Shopping tab plus Search, Images, Lens, YouTube, Maps, and Gemini, fed by product data submitted through Google Merchant Center as free listings or paid Shopping ads.
Google Shopping ads Google Shopping ads (also called Product Listing Ads or PLAs) are paid, product-based ads that show a product image, price, title, and store name. Google builds them from the product data you submit in Merchant Center and shows them across the Shopping tab, Search, Images, YouTube, and more.
GTIN A GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is GS1's globally unique product identifier, encoded in retail barcodes. It comes in 8, 12 (UPC), 13 (EAN), and 14-digit formats and names one specific trade item across supply chains and online listings.
gTLD A gTLD (generic top-level domain) is a domain ending that is not tied to any country, such as .com, .org, .net, or newer strings like .shop and .store. Unlike a ccTLD (.de, .fr), a gTLD gives search engines no geographic signal about which market a site is meant for.
hreflang return tag error A hreflang return tag error occurs when one page names another as a language or region alternate but the second page does not link back. Because hreflang relationships must be reciprocal, Google may ignore the annotation, so neither page gets the intended regional targeting.
hreflang sitemap A hreflang sitemap is an XML sitemap that declares each page's language and regional variants with xhtml:link elements, instead of placing hreflang tags in the HTML head or an HTTP header. Every URL entry must list all alternate versions, including itself, so Google can match the right locale to each searcher.
international SEO International SEO is the practice of structuring and signaling a website so search engines serve the right language or country version to each visitor, using URL structure (ccTLDs, subdomains, or subdirectories), hreflang annotations, and other geo-targeting signals.
international targeting International targeting tells search engines which country or language a page is meant for, using signals like ccTLDs, hreflang annotations, and URL structure. Google Search Console's old International Targeting report (which let you set a target country) is deprecated, so these on-page signals now do the work.
international URL structure International URL structure is how a site organizes its locale-specific pages, using one of the patterns Google supports: country-code domains (example.de), subdomains (de.example.com), or subdirectories (example.com/de/). The pattern you pick sets your geotargeting signal and where link equity pools.
internationalization Internationalization (i18n) is the practice of building a website so it can be adapted to different languages, regions, and cultures without re-engineering. It is the upfront groundwork (flexible URLs, UTF-8 encoding, locale-aware templates) that makes later localization for each target market straightforward.
ISO 3166 country codes ISO 3166 country codes are the international standard for naming countries and territories in short form. Part one (ISO 3166-1) gives each of 249 entries a two-letter alpha-2 code (US, GB, DE), a three-letter alpha-3 code, and a three-digit numeric code. SEO uses the alpha-2 codes in hreflang region tags.
ISO 639 language codes ISO 639 is the international standard that assigns short codes to languages. ISO 639-1 gives each major language a two-letter code (en, de, fr, zh), and those alpha-2 codes are what Google's hreflang attribute uses to label a page's language.
language negotiation Language negotiation is the server-side logic that chooses which language version of a page to return by reading the visitor's Accept-Language HTTP header, then names its choice in the Content-Language response header.
language targeting Language targeting is directing a web page to searchers who use a specific language, regardless of their country. In SEO it is signaled mainly with hreflang annotations whose first code is an ISO 639-1 language such as "en" or "es", with an optional region code.
local inventory ads Local inventory ads (LIA) are Google ads that show nearby shoppers which products are in stock at your physical stores, with price and pickup options, across Google Search and Shopping. Free local listings are the unpaid twin, surfacing the same in-store product data at no cost.
locale A locale is a language plus region code (like en-US or fr-CA) that tells software which language to show and which regional conventions to use for dates, numbers, and currency. In BCP 47 form it combines a lowercase language subtag with an optional uppercase region subtag.
localization Localization (l10n) is the process of adapting a website, store, or product to the language, currency, formats, and cultural expectations of a specific target market. It goes beyond translation, covering pricing, imagery, and UX so the experience feels native to local shoppers.
machine translation SEO Machine translation SEO is the practice of managing the search risks and benefits of auto-translated pages. Google does not penalize machine translation itself, but publishing unedited translations at scale to fill locales can trigger its scaled content abuse policy when the pages add little value for users.
Magento SEO Magento SEO is search engine optimization tailored to the Magento (Adobe Commerce) platform. It focuses on the platform's specific quirks, such as layered navigation, URL-rewrite rules, and canonical settings, that can create duplicate content and waste crawl budget if left on their defaults.
marketplace SEO Marketplace SEO is the practice of optimizing product listings so they rank highly inside a marketplace's own search engine, such as Amazon's A9/A10, eBay Best Match, or Etsy search. It blends keyword relevance in titles and attributes with performance signals like sales velocity, conversion, and reviews.
merchant listings structured data Merchant listings structured data is Product and Offer schema markup that makes a purchasable, seller-owned product page eligible for Google's merchant listing experiences, such as popular products, the shopping knowledge panel, and Google Images. It needs a price above zero, a currency, and availability.
MPN MPN (Manufacturer Part Number) is a manufacturer-assigned code that uniquely identifies a single product among all products from the same manufacturer. In shopping feeds and Product schema it acts as a unique product identifier, and Google Merchant Center requires it for any product that has no manufacturer-assigned GTIN.
multilingual SEO Multilingual SEO is the practice of optimizing a website that publishes content in more than one language so each language version can be crawled, indexed, and ranked for the right audience. It relies on hreflang annotations, a clear URL structure, and real translations rather than machine output.
multilingual sitemap A multilingual sitemap is an XML sitemap that lists every language and region version of each URL using xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang annotations, so search engines can serve users the right localized page. Each entry must reference all variants, including itself.
multiregional SEO Multiregional SEO is the practice of optimizing a website that targets users in more than one country, so search engines serve the right country or language version to each audience. It relies on signals like country-code TLDs, hreflang annotations, server location, and on-page cues such as local currency and addresses.
offer schema Offer schema is schema.org/Offer markup, usually nested in Product structured data, that declares a product's price, currency, and stock status. Google requires price and priceCurrency for merchant listing rich results and reads availability for in-stock or out-of-stock labels.
out-of-stock SEO Out-of-stock SEO is the practice of keeping a temporarily unavailable product page live, indexable, and correctly marked up (schema.org availability set to OutOfStock) instead of deleting or 404ing it, so the URL holds its rankings and recovers the moment the item is back in stock.
price drop structured data Price drop structured data is Product schema markup (an Offer with a single, specific price) that makes an e-commerce page eligible for Google's price drop rich result, a badge showing a lowered price against the product's historical average. Google computes the drop itself and does not guarantee it appears.
product data specification The product data specification is Google's official set of attributes and formatting rules a product feed must follow (id, title, description, link, image_link, price, availability, and more) so items qualify for Google Shopping ads and free product listings in Merchant Center.
product detail page A product detail page (PDP) is the individual web page for a single product in an ecommerce catalog, showing its images, description, price, variants, availability, and add-to-cart action. It is the core product template and the highest-intent page a shopper reaches before cart and checkout.
product feed A product feed is a structured file (CSV, XML, TSV, or JSON) listing your products and their attributes, such as id, title, description, link, image link, price, and availability, that you submit to channels like Google Merchant Center so they can display and rank your items.
product feed optimization Product feed optimization is the practice of improving the titles, descriptions, and attributes in your Google Merchant Center product data so items match more search queries and appear correctly in Shopping ads, free listings, and AI shopping surfaces.
product identifiers Product identifiers are standardized identifiers, mainly GTIN, MPN, and brand, that pin down exactly which product a listing refers to. Google uses them to match your listing to the same item sold elsewhere, so accurate identifiers help your products qualify for Shopping and merchant listing rich results.
product listing page A product listing page (PLP) is an ecommerce page that shows a grid or list of multiple products, such as a category page, subcategory page, filtered/faceted view, or on-site search results. Each item links out to its own product detail page (PDP).
product page SEO Product page SEO is the on-page optimization of an individual product detail page (PDP) so it ranks in organic search and earns rich results. It covers the title, description, images, Product structured data, internal links, and page speed for that one product URL.
product rich results Product rich results are enhanced product listings in Google Search that pull details like price, availability, star ratings, and reviews from Product structured data on the page. Google renders two versions: product snippets (for editorial or review pages) and merchant listings (for pages where a shopper can buy).
product variant SEO Product variant SEO is the practice of handling product variations (color, size, storage, finish) so search engines index one strong page instead of many thin, near-duplicate ones. The usual fix is a single product URL with on-page selectors, backed by canonical tags and structured data.
pros and cons structured data Pros and cons structured data is schema markup using the positiveNotes and negativeNotes properties (each an ItemList) inside a Review object to summarize a product's upsides and downsides. Google shows it only for editorial product review pages, not merchant product pages or customer reviews.
return policy schema Return policy schema (MerchantReturnPolicy) is structured data that states a product's return terms: the country it applies to, the return window, methods, and fees. Google Search can use it to show those details next to your product listings and in knowledge panels.
shipping details structured data Shipping details structured data (schema.org OfferShippingDetails) is markup nested under a product's Offer that declares shipping cost and delivery time, making the product eligible to display those details in Google merchant listings and product rich results.
Shopify SEO Shopify SEO is the practice of optimizing a Shopify store to rank in organic search within the platform's fixed structure: its forced /products/ and /collections/ URL prefixes, theme-based templates, and auto-generated canonical tags, sitemap, and robots.txt.
Shopping Graph The Shopping Graph is Google's live, machine-learning dataset of the world's products, sellers, prices, reviews and availability. It powers product results across Google Search, Shopping, Images, YouTube and AI features like AI Mode and AI Overviews, drawing on merchant feeds plus product data from across the web.
subdomain vs subdirectory Subdomain vs subdirectory is the choice between hosting a section of a site at a subdomain (blog.example.com) or a subdirectory (example.com/blog/). Google says it treats both the same in Search, but a subdirectory keeps all content on one domain, so ranking signals stay consolidated.
transcreation Transcreation is creative re-translation that carries a message into another language by keeping its intent, tone, and emotional effect rather than its literal wording. It blends translation with copywriting, so a slogan or product headline reads as if written for the target market instead of converted into it.
WooCommerce SEO WooCommerce SEO is optimizing an online store built on WooCommerce, the WordPress e-commerce plugin, so its product and category pages rank in search. It pairs standard WordPress on-page SEO with store specifics like product schema, clean permalinks, and faceted-filter control.
zombie pages Zombie pages are indexed URLs that get little or no organic traffic and add no real value, such as thin, duplicate, or outdated pages. In bulk they waste crawl budget and can drag down a site's overall quality signals, which is why SEOs prune or consolidate them.
