Article schema
Also called: article structured data, newsarticle schema, blogposting schema
Article schema is structured data (using the schema.org Article, NewsArticle, or BlogPosting type) that tells Google a page is a news, blog, or sports article. It helps Search show better headline text, images, and publish dates, and gives AI systems a cleaner author and freshness signal.
Google supports three types for article content: Article, NewsArticle, and BlogPosting. Use NewsArticle for time-sensitive news, BlogPosting for blog posts, and Article as the generic fallback. The subtype choice has no direct ranking benefit; all three share the same fields. Per Google, there are no required properties, only recommended ones: headline, image (ideally three, one each for 1x1, 4x3, and 16x9 aspect ratios), author (with a name and a url that identifies them), datePublished, and dateModified, with dates in ISO 8601. Structured data is not a ranking factor, and Google keeps these properties optional on purpose. Article markup is not required for Top Stories or Discover, but valid markup that matches the visible page more explicitly tells Google what your content is, makes posts eligible for enhanced Search appearances, and hands AI answer engines a clean author-and-freshness signal. How it affects your traffic
Article markup will not lift rankings on its own, and it is not a ticket into Top Stories or Discover. What it does is make your content clearer to Google: correct headline, image, author, and date fields make blog and news pages eligible for richer Search appearances and give AI answer engines a clean author-and-freshness signal. Getting the JSON-LD valid, matched to visible content, and free of warnings is exactly the kind of work our Technical SEO service handles.
