Technical SEO

rich results

Also called: rich result, rich snippet, rich snippets

Rich results are enhanced Google Search listings that go beyond the standard blue link, adding elements like star ratings, images, prices, or breadcrumbs. Google generates them from structured data (schema.org markup) that describes a page's content and makes the page eligible for the richer display.

Rich results are also called rich snippets. They are the visual upgrades you see in Google Search: a recipe with a photo and cook time, a product with a price and review stars, a set of breadcrumbs above the URL. Google reads structured data on the page, understands what the content is, and decides whether to render it in an enhanced format.

Eligible is not guaranteed

Structured data does not force a rich result and it is not a ranking factor. Google’s docs are careful with one word: valid markup makes a page “eligible” for enhanced display, and Google still decides per query whether to show it. Markup that is incomplete, inaccurate, or describes content a user cannot see on the page can disqualify the page or earn a structured-data manual action.

You add the markup as JSON-LD, usually in the page head:

{ "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "Product",
  "name": "...", "aggregateRating": { "ratingValue": "4.7" } }

Types that still earn visible rich results in 2026 include Product, Review snippet, Breadcrumb, Recipe, Video, Event, and Organization. Not every type survives. Google limited FAQ rich results to authoritative government and health sites in 2023, then removed the FAQ appearance entirely in May 2026, and dropped HowTo results on both desktop and mobile. The schema is still valid to ship, it just no longer produces a visible feature. Validate what you build with the Rich Results Test and watch the enhancement reports in Search Console, because a warning there usually means the feature quietly stopped showing.

How it affects your traffic

Rich results widen your listing and can lift click-through even when your ranking position does not move, because stars, prices, and images pull the eye down the page. But the markup has to be complete, match the visible content, and target types Google still supports, or it does nothing (or worse, triggers a structured-data manual action). Our Technical SEO work audits your existing schema, fixes invalid or orphaned markup, and implements the types that still pay off so your pages qualify for the richer display.
