Author authority

Also called: author E-E-A-T, author EEAT

Author authority is the set of signals that establish the individual who wrote or reviewed a page as a credible expert on its topic (a byline, an author bio, verifiable credentials, and a positive reputation from independent sources). It is the person level of Google's E-E-A-T.

What Google actually looks at

Author authority is the person-level layer of E-E-A-T, and Google is explicit that E-E-A-T “itself isn’t a specific ranking factor.” Its systems use a mix of signals to identify good E-E-A-T, with Trust as the most important member, and the author feeds that judgment. Google’s helpful-content guidance asks whether a page is “written or reviewed by an expert or enthusiast who demonstrably knows the topic well,” and asks whether pages “carry a byline, where one might be expected,” with bylines that lead to “further information about the author or authors involved, giving background about them.”

Two levels matter. On-page, you make expertise self-evident: a real byline, an author page with credentials, and Person schema that links out via sameAs. Off-page, reputation is earned. Google’s quality rater guidelines have raters research the reputation of the content creator using independent, outside sources, so the same name should recur across guest posts, talks, interviews, and third-party citations.

The Experience “E” is the newest lever. A page can earn trust through the expertise “that comes from having actually used a product or service, or visiting a place,” so first-hand author notes count.

Example: for home-wiring advice, Google’s rater guidelines ask whom you would trust, “a skilled electrician” or “an antique homes enthusiast who has no knowledge of electrical wiring.” Same words, different author authority, different trust.

How it affects your traffic

Weak author signals cap how well strong content can perform, especially on YMYL and commercial topics where Google leans hardest on the "who." Adding real bylines, credentialed author pages, Person schema, and consistent off-site reputation is on-page work that lifts trust across every page an author touches, not just one. That is the kind of fix our On-Page SEO service ships: byline architecture, author-entity markup, and E-E-A-T signals wired into templates so the whole site compounds. For competitive queries and AI Overviews, a recognizable expert byline is often the difference between getting cited and getting skipped.
