Authoritativeness

Also called: authority signals, authoritativeness in SEO, E-E-A-T authority

Authoritativeness is the "A" in Google's E-E-A-T framework: the degree to which a content creator or website is recognized as a go-to source on a topic. It is earned through external signals like citations, links, and mentions, not self-declared, and it is topic-dependent.

Authoritativeness is the third pillar of E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness). Google added the second E, Experience, to its Search Quality Rater Guidelines in December 2022; the rest of the framework has guided human raters since 2014.

What Google actually asks

Google’s rater guidelines frame it as whether a creator or site is “known as a go-to source for the topic.” The public helpful-content documentation turns this into a self-check: would someone researching your site “come away with an impression that it is well-trusted or widely-recognized as an authority on its topic?”

Two nuances matter. First, authoritativeness is relative. A page can be authoritative for one query and useless for another (a passport office is the authority on passports; a local bakery is the authority on its own opening hours). Second, E-E-A-T is not a ranking factor and Google does not assign it a score. Its systems read a mix of signals that correlate with authority, and trust is the member Google calls most important.

You do not declare authority, other credible sources confer it. It accrues through editorial links, citations, brand mentions, reviews, press, and bylines that lead to real author credentials (author bios, sameAs links to verifiable profiles). The recognition happens off your site. On your pages, your job is to make that recognition legible to a machine.

How it affects your traffic

On-page work is where authoritativeness becomes readable to both Google and AI answer engines. Named author bylines linked to credentials, clear sourcing, and pages written to be the definitive answer are the on-page signals that let ranking systems (and tools like AI Overviews and ChatGPT) decide you are the source worth citing. Get these wrong and strong backlinks land on pages that read as anonymous, so the authority you earned off-site never converts into rankings or cited traffic. That translation is core On-Page SEO work.
