A backlink checker is an SEO tool that reports which external pages and domains link to a given site, along with anchor text, referring-domain counts, and follow/nofollow status. It works from a crawler-built link index (Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz) or from your own confirmed links in Google Search Console.
Backlink checkers come in two flavors, and they rarely agree on the numbers.
First-party vs third-party
Google Search Console’s Links report is the only view of your own confirmed backlinks straight from Google. It groups three tables: top linked pages, top linking sites, and top linking text (the anchor text other sites used). Google is explicit that this is a sample, not every link, that data is grouped by root domain, and that the report does not flag nofollow status. You can export up to 100,000 rows.
Third-party checkers run their own web crawlers and build a separate link index. Ahrefs, for example, reports its index at 493 billion pages and 35 trillion external backlinks, refreshed every 15 minutes. These tools add proprietary scores like Domain Rating and URL Rating that Google does not use, plus follow/nofollow splits, anchor breakdowns, and lost-link tracking.
The catch: no third-party tool sees Google’s actual link graph, and each vendor crawls differently, so link counts vary between tools. Treat any single number as an estimate, not a fact.
Typical jobs for the tool: audit your own profile, watch for links dropping off after a migration, and study a competitor’s referring domains to find realistic outreach targets. Keep quality in view. A handful of relevant, editorial links usually does more than thousands of low-value ones.
How it affects your traffic
A backlink checker is diagnostic, not productive. It tells you where your link profile stands, but it does not earn a single link.
