Backlink gap analysis is the process of finding referring domains that link to your competitors but not to you, so you can pursue those same sites for links. Also called link gap analysis or link intersect, it turns a rival's link profile into a prioritized outreach list.

How it works
Start with competitors that actually outrank you (higher Domain Rating), then compare referring domains. Ahrefs Link Intersect lets you enter up to ten competitors and toggle between referring domains and referring pages, so you find both a linking site and the exact article to pitch. Semrush Backlink Gap compares up to five domains; its “Prospects for domain” filter surfaces the domains your rivals have and you do not, and the Matches column shows how many of the compared sites each domain links to. A domain that links to four of five competitors but not you is a strong signal that it covers your space and would likely link to you too.
Raw gap count is the wrong target. Glenn Gabe frames the useful version as a “link authority gap,” focusing on the most authoritative domains linking to a competitor when those same sites ignore you. Filter for dofollow status, a Domain Rating floor, and real organic traffic, then review each domain by hand for topical fit. As Gabe puts it, “earning powerful links from authoritative sites is a long-term process,” so treat the output as a prioritized queue, not a one-week task.
