backlink gap analysis Backlink gap analysis is the process of finding referring domains that link to your competitors but not to you, so you can pursue those same sites for links. Also called link gap analysis or link intersect, it turns a rival's link profile into a prioritized outreach list.
cannibalization audit A cannibalization audit is a review of a site that finds pages competing for the same keyword and search intent, then decides how to resolve them: consolidate, redirect, re-target, or leave alone. The goal is to concentrate ranking signals on one page instead of splitting them across several.
competitor analysis Competitor analysis in SEO is the process of studying the sites that outrank you for your target keywords, examining their content, backlinks, and technical setup to find the gaps you can close and the openings you can take.
competitor benchmarking Competitor benchmarking is the practice of measuring your own SEO metrics (rankings, organic traffic, share of voice, referring domains, Core Web Vitals) against named competitors who rank for your target keywords, so you can see where you lead, where you lag, and what to fix first.
content audit A content audit is a systematic inventory and assessment of every page on a website, scoring each URL against traffic, rankings, and quality so you can decide whether to keep, improve, merge, or remove it. It turns a sprawling site into a prioritized action list.
content brief A content brief is a spec that tells a writer exactly how to build a target page: its primary and secondary keywords, the search intent behind them, a heading outline, target length, internal links, and meta guidance. It converts keyword research into a first draft that lands on target.
content calendar A content calendar (also called an editorial calendar) is a schedule that lays out what content you will publish, when, on which channels, and who owns it. In SEO it turns keyword research and strategy into a dated production plan so topics ship in a coordinated, trackable order.
content consolidation Content consolidation is the SEO practice of merging several overlapping, thin, or competing pages into one stronger page, then 301-redirecting the retired URLs to it so their links and ranking signals concentrate on a single authoritative URL.
content decay Content decay is the slow, sustained decline in an aging page's organic traffic, rankings, and relevance, measured against its own historical peak. It usually reflects fresher competitors or shifting search intent rather than anything broken in the page itself.
content gap analysis Content gap analysis is the process of finding topics and queries your audience searches for that your site does not cover well, usually by comparing your pages against competitors that already rank for them. It flags where content is missing, thin, outdated, or off-intent so you can fill it.
content mapping Content mapping is the practice of aligning each piece of content, and the keywords it targets, to a specific audience persona and buyer-journey stage (awareness, consideration, decision) so every page has a clear job in moving a visitor toward conversion.
content operations Content operations (content ops) is the system of people, process, and tooling a team uses to plan, produce, publish, and maintain content at scale. It turns a content strategy into repeatable output, with defined roles, workflows, and quality checks so publishing stays fast and consistent.
content pruning Content pruning is the practice of auditing a site and removing, noindexing, consolidating, or refreshing low-value pages so the remaining content carries stronger quality signals. It concentrates crawl budget and ranking strength on the pages that actually perform.
content refresh A content refresh means updating an existing published page (its facts, examples, structure, and links) to reverse traffic or ranking decay instead of publishing a new one. The URL stays the same, so the page keeps the backlinks, age, and index history it has already earned.
content strategy Content strategy is the plan that governs what content you create, for which audience, and why, plus how that content is maintained and eventually retired. In SEO, it turns ad hoc publishing into a system built to answer real user questions and earn durable search visibility.
content velocity Content velocity is the rate at which a website publishes new content, usually measured as pages or articles per week, month, or quarter. It describes output pace, not quality, so higher velocity only helps SEO when each piece is genuinely useful to readers.
domain migration A domain migration is the process of moving a website from one domain to another (for example, from oldbrand.com to newbrand.com) while keeping its search rankings, traffic, and link equity. It relies on one-to-one 301 redirects and Search Console's Change of Address tool to move ranking signals to the new domain.
growth loop A growth loop is a self-reinforcing system where the output of one cycle feeds back in as the input for the next, so growth compounds over time. In SEO, ranked pages earn traffic, links, and authority that help the next pages rank, unlike a funnel that resets after each conversion.
historical optimization Historical optimization is the practice of systematically updating and republishing older content that already earns search traffic, refreshing its facts, keywords, and on-page SEO so it competes again in the SERPs. Coined by HubSpot, it prioritizes improving proven posts over creating net-new content.
indexation rate Indexation rate is the share of a site's known pages that a search engine has actually added to its index (indexed pages divided by total submitted or crawlable pages). A low rate means engines are crawling your pages but rejecting or ignoring many of them.
information architecture Information architecture (IA) is the practice of organizing, structuring, and labeling a website's content so people and search engines can find what they need. In SEO it shapes how pages are grouped into categories, how they link to each other, and how deep any page sits from the homepage.
keyword strategy A keyword strategy is the plan for which search terms a site targets, how they are prioritized (by search volume, difficulty, and intent), and which single page owns each one. It turns raw keyword research into a page-by-page map so every query has one clear page built to answer it.
programmatic SEO Programmatic SEO is the practice of generating many web pages at scale by feeding a structured dataset into one repeatable page template, so each page targets a single variation of a keyword pattern (for example "[service] in [city]" or "convert [X] to [Y]").
replatforming Replatforming is moving a website to a new CMS or ecommerce platform, for example WooCommerce to Shopify or a custom build to a headless stack. Because it usually rewrites URLs, templates, and site structure at once, Google treats it as a site move that can hold or lose organic traffic depending entirely on how the migration is executed.
SEO A/B testing SEO A/B testing (or SEO split testing) measures how an on-page change affects organic traffic by applying it to a random set of similar pages (the variant) while leaving a matched set unchanged (the control), then testing whether the difference against a forecast is statistically significant.
SEO audit An SEO audit is a systematic health check of a website's organic-search performance that examines technical, on-page, content, and backlink signals to find what is blocking rankings and to prioritize the highest-impact fixes.
SEO automation SEO automation means using software, scripts, or AI to run repetitive SEO tasks (keyword research, rank tracking, site audits, reporting) instead of doing them by hand. It speeds up data-heavy work but does not replace the strategy and judgment a human still has to supply.
SEO dashboard An SEO dashboard is a single live view that pulls a site's key search metrics (clicks, impressions, click-through rate, average position, rankings, and traffic) into one place, so you can track performance and spot problems without opening several separate tools.
SEO forecasting SEO forecasting is the practice of projecting future organic traffic, conversions, or revenue from search by combining keyword search volume, current or target rankings, and click-through rate by position, then adjusting for seasonality and business context.
SEO gap analysis SEO gap analysis is the process of measuring where your site trails competitors across keywords, content, backlinks, SERP features, and technical health, then turning those gaps into a prioritized list of opportunities. It answers one question: what are rivals ranking for that you are not?
SEO health score An SEO health score is a composite 0-100 metric that audit tools like Ahrefs and Semrush assign to a website to summarize how many crawled pages are free of technical SEO issues. It is a diagnostic triage signal set by the tool, not a Google ranking factor.
SEO migration SEO migration is the process of preserving a website's organic rankings and traffic when you change its domain, platform, URL structure, or protocol (HTTP to HTTPS). It centers on mapping every old URL to a relevant new one with permanent 301 or 308 redirects so Google can transfer ranking signals.
SEO monitoring SEO monitoring is the ongoing tracking of a site's search performance (rankings, organic traffic, indexing, technical health, backlinks, and visibility in AI answers) so changes and problems get caught early rather than weeks later. It turns SEO from a one-time project into a continuous feedback loop.
SEO reporting SEO reporting is the practice of tracking organic search performance and communicating it to stakeholders, connecting SEO work to metrics like clicks, rankings, traffic, and revenue so teams can prove value and decide what to do next.
SEO roadmap An SEO roadmap is a sequenced, time-phased plan that lays out which SEO initiatives (technical fixes, content, links) get done, in what order, and by when. It groups the work into 30/60/90-day sprints or quarters and orders it by impact versus effort.
SEO strategy An SEO strategy is the prioritized, ongoing plan for growing a website's organic search visibility. It ties keyword and competitor research, technical health, content, and links to specific business goals, then sequences the work so effort lands where it actually moves rankings and traffic.
site audit A site audit is an automated crawl of your website that surfaces on-site SEO issues at scale, such as broken links, non-indexable pages, slow Core Web Vitals, duplicate content, and invalid structured data. Audit tools group findings by severity so you can prioritize what to fix first.
site migration A site migration is any change that moves a website to a new domain, URL structure, CMS, hosting, or protocol. Google splits them into moves with URL changes (which need redirects) and moves without URL changes (hosting or CMS swaps where the visible URLs stay the same).
sitemap generation Sitemap generation is the process of producing an XML file that lists a site's important URLs so search engines can discover and crawl them more efficiently. Each sitemap holds up to 50,000 URLs and 50MB uncompressed; larger sites split them and reference the parts from a sitemap index file.
SXO SXO (Search Experience Optimization) is the practice of designing pages to satisfy the searcher's intent and give a good on-page experience, not just to rank. It blends SEO, UX design, and conversion optimization so a page both earns the click and keeps the visitor after it.
technical SEO audit A technical SEO audit is a systematic check of whether search engines can crawl, render, and index a site's pages, plus how fast it loads and how its architecture is organized. It surfaces the technical barriers blocking rankings and produces a prioritized fix list.
