link building
Also called: link acquisition, link earning
Link building is the practice of getting other websites to link to yours to grow authority and improve search rankings. Google uses links to discover pages and to judge relevance, but only editorially earned links count; buying or manipulating links breaks its link spam policies.
Search engines were built on links. Google still uses them two ways: to find new pages by following them, and as a relevance signal when ranking. A link from a trusted, topically related site acts like a vote, which is why a strong backlink profile correlates with higher rankings on competitive terms.
What counts as a real link
Not every link helps. Google’s spam policies treat creating links “primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings” as link spam, and name buying or selling links, excessive reciprocal linking (“link to me and I’ll link to you”), automated link generation, and advertorials with paid links as schemes. Paid or sponsored links are fine only when tagged with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" so they pass no ranking credit.
That pushes real link building toward earning links people actually want to cite: original data, useful tools, digital PR, and genuinely helpful content. Anchor text matters too. Google wants it “descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant,” not stuffed with exact-match keywords.
Example: a SaaS company publishes an industry survey, reporters cite the stat, and each story links back. Those editorial links carry weight; a batch of directory submissions with identical keyword anchors does not, and can invite a manual action.
The same authority signals increasingly feed AI search. Answers in AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity lean on sources already cited and trusted across the web, so earned links help you get surfaced there too.
How it affects your traffic
On competitive keywords, on-page work alone rarely lifts you into the top results; the pages outranking you usually have more high-quality referring domains. A deliberate link-building campaign closes that gap, which is why our Link Building service focuses on earned, editorially given links rather than the paid networks that trigger penalties. Authority compounds: it raises rankings across the whole domain and increasingly decides which sources AI engines cite.
