bounce rate
Also called: bounce percentage
Bounce rate is the share of website sessions that end without meaningful engagement. In GA4 it equals 100% minus the engagement rate, so a bounce is a session that lasts under 10 seconds, has no key event, and has fewer than two page views.
The metric has two eras, and they do not measure the same thing. In Universal Analytics (retired in 2023) a bounce was a single-page session with no interaction event, so a visitor who read your whole article and left still counted as a bounce. GA4 reversed the logic: bounce rate is now the inverse of engagement rate, and a session counts as engaged if it meets any one of three conditions.
Engaged session = any one of:
- lasts longer than 10 seconds
- has a key event (formerly a "conversion")
- has 2 or more page or screen views
So the same visitor who stays 15 seconds on one page is engaged in GA4, not a bounce. The two numbers are not comparable across the two tools, which trips up a lot of year-over-year reporting.
One thing bounce rate is not: a direct Google ranking factor. Gary Illyes said plainly in 2015, “we don’t use analytics/bounce rate in search ranking,” and John Mueller repeated the point in 2022. A high bounce rate can even be fine. Someone who finds a phone number or a quick answer on one page and leaves is satisfied, not lost. Read it per page type and search intent, not as a single site-wide average.
How it affects your traffic
Bounce rate is a diagnostic, not a lever you pull on Google, so chasing a lower number for its own sake wastes budget. Its real value is reading it in context: a bounce spike on a page that used to convert usually signals a mismatch between the query that sent the visitor and what the page delivers, or a speed and layout problem. That is the kind of read an SEO consulting engagement uses to decide whether a page needs new content, a faster template, or a different target keyword, before you spend on links or a full rewrite.
