pogo-sticking
Also called: pogosticking, pogo sticking
Pogo-sticking is when a searcher clicks a result, quickly returns to the search page, and picks a different result instead. It signals the page did not match the query intent, the same return-to-SERP behavior Google's click systems treat as a bad click.
Pogo-sticking looks like a bounce, but it is a sharper signal. Bounce rate counts any single-page session from any source. Dwell time measures how long a visitor stays before leaving. Pogo-sticking is specific: the visitor arrived from a search result and went straight back to that same SERP to try a competitor. It reads as a fast “this isn’t it” vote against your page for that query.
Is it a ranking factor?
Google has given two answers over the years. In a 2018 Webmaster hangout, John Mueller said Google tries not to use signals like pogo-sticking directly, because there are many innocent reasons a person clicks back (comparing options, a misclick, casual browsing). Then the 2023-2024 DOJ antitrust trial put Pandu Nayak under oath, and testimony described NavBoost, a click-based re-ranking system that separates “good clicks” from “bad clicks,” where a bad click is assessed partly through return-to-SERP behavior. The same good-click and bad-click fields later surfaced in the 2024 Google API leak. So the specific label is not a knob you can see, but the underlying behavior does feed ranking in aggregate.
Common causes are intent mismatch, misleading titles, thin content, slow load, intrusive pop-ups, and the answer buried below the fold. Example: a “best running shoes under $100” query lands on a page that opens with 800 words of brand history before any list. The reader leaves in three seconds and clicks the next result. The fix is almost always to match the page to the promise in the snippet and put the answer first.
How it affects your traffic
Pogo-sticking is a symptom, not a root cause, which is why an SEO Audit is the right first move. An audit maps which pages lose searchers fastest, checks the ranking query against what the page actually delivers, and separates true intent mismatch from fixable friction like slow load or pop-ups. Fix the pages that leak return-to-SERP clicks and you protect the aggregate click signals NavBoost rewards, which compounds into steadier rankings and more of the traffic you already earned staying put.
