Brick-and-mortar

Also called: storefront business, brick and mortar store, physical storefront, B&M business

A brick-and-mortar business operates from a physical location that customers can visit in person, such as a store, restaurant, or office. The term contrasts physical storefronts with online-only businesses that have no place a customer can walk into.

In local SEO, whether a business is brick-and-mortar decides how it can show up in Google’s local results. A Business Profile is allowed if the business “has a physical location that customers can visit, or travels to customers where they are.” A brick-and-mortar (storefront) profile publishes its street address, and Google requires permanent fixed signage plus staff who receive customers during stated hours. That verified address is what makes it eligible for the local map pack, the block of pins above the regular blue links for searches like “coffee shop near me.”

This sets a storefront apart from a service-area business (a plumber, a mobile groomer) that hides its address and lists a travel radius instead, and from a hybrid that does both. Google explicitly bars virtual offices and unstaffed co-working desks from claiming a storefront profile. So “brick-and-mortar” is not just marketing language; it is a ranking-eligibility line.

For example, a bakery with a counter people walk up to is brick-and-mortar and competes in the map pack on proximity, reviews, and profile completeness. A wholesale baker who only delivers is not, and would set up as service-area. Getting that classification right controls whether your pin appears, whether reviews attach to a real place, and whether nearby searchers can find you.

How it affects your traffic

Most of a storefront's new customers now start with a phone search, and the map pack grabs a large share of those clicks before anyone scrolls to organic listings. If your Google Business Profile is miscategorized, missing signage verification, or losing on proximity and review count, that walk-in traffic goes to whoever ranks above you. Our Local SEO work fixes profile setup, NAP consistency, category selection, and review signals so your physical location surfaces when nearby people search for what you sell.
