category description
Also called: category page content, category copy, category page SEO content
A category description is the SEO copy on an e-commerce category (product listing) page that explains the product group, who it is for, and how to choose. It gives search engines unique text to rank a page that would otherwise be only a grid of product links.
Where it goes and how much
Google’s own e-commerce guidance is mostly about links, not prose. It says category pages need real <a href> links to every product so Googlebot can crawl the whole group, and it gives no target word count. The description is where you add the unique, topical text that a bare grid of product links lacks.
The common pattern is a short intro (two or three sentences) above the product grid so the listing still loads first, with a fuller block or an FAQ below, often collapsible on mobile. There is no fixed length. One analysis of top-ranking category pages found working copy anywhere from 31 to nearly 2,900 words, so length should follow the query rather than a template.
Write for the buyer, not the crawler. Answer the questions people actually ask about the group (materials, sizing, sourcing, how to choose between options) and use the head term naturally instead of stuffing it. One trap: if the description outweighs the products, Google can misread a transactional page as an informational article and drop it for the buying query it should own.
Copy written as plain, direct answers (“the best trail runners for wide feet are…”) is also the kind of passage AI assistants tend to quote for shopping questions, so the same text can earn visibility beyond the standard blue links.
How it affects your traffic
Category pages are usually the highest-intent, highest-volume templates on a store, and thin ones leave rankings on the table. Adding unique descriptions to your top categories is one of the faster wins in e-commerce SEO because it turns near-duplicate grids into pages Google can tell apart and rank for their head terms. Our E-commerce SEO work maps which categories deserve copy, writes it to match search intent, and places it so it lifts rankings without smothering the products or flipping the page into informational intent.
