category page SEO

Also called: category seo, plp seo, collection page seo

Category page SEO is the practice of optimizing an ecommerce category or collection listing page (a PLP) so it ranks for broad, high-intent head terms like "running shoes" instead of leaving that demand to individual product pages.

Category pages (also called product listing pages, or PLPs) are the collection views that group products under a theme, like /shoes/running. They matter because head terms with buying intent (“running shoes”, “buy office chairs”) usually resolve to a category, not a single product. A well-built category page captures that demand and funnels shoppers into products.

What Google looks for

Google’s ecommerce docs treat category pages as navigation hubs: link from menus to categories, from categories to subcategories, and from subcategories to every product you want indexed, using real <a href> links rather than JavaScript click handlers. The more internal links a page earns, the higher its relative importance, so your priority categories deserve links from the homepage.

On the page itself, use a keyword-led title tag, a single clear H1, and a short block of descriptive copy so the page is not just a bare product grid (which reads as thin content).

The classic trap is faceted navigation. Filter combinations of size, color, and price can spawn huge numbers of near-duplicate URLs that burn crawl budget and dilute signals. Let only facets with real search demand be indexable (a clean /sofas/blue), give them unique titles and copy, and keep the rest out of the index. Google now suggests disallowing crawling of low-value facet URLs in robots.txt when server resources are a concern, or applying noindex while keeping them crawlable when you still want Google to discover the products inside.

How it affects your traffic

For an ecommerce store, category pages are usually the highest-value organic real estate: they target head terms with more volume than any single product and sit one click from the cart. When they are thin, buried under messy facet URLs, or missing internal links, that head-term traffic leaks to competitors who structured their catalog better. Our E-commerce SEO work fixes category architecture, facet indexing rules, and on-page copy so those pages rank for the terms that convert.
