co-occurrence

Also called: term co-occurrence, keyword co-occurrence

Co-occurrence in SEO is the presence of relevant keywords in the text around a link or brand mention, not just inside the anchor itself. Search engines read that surrounding context to work out what the linked page, or the mentioned brand, is about.

Co-occurrence vs co-citation

These two get mixed up. Co-occurrence is about words sitting near each other, for example your keywords appearing close to a link or an unlinked brand mention. Co-citation is about whole sites or brands being named together by a third party. Both answer the same question a search engine asks: what is this page (or brand) actually about, and who does it belong next to?

Google confirms the mechanism even though it never uses the word “co-occurrence.” Its link guidance says the words before and after links matter, and that anchor text plus surrounding context help it infer what the target page covers. So a link reading read our guide inside the sentence “read our guide to technical SEO audits” tells Google far more than the bare anchor, because the co-occurring phrase “technical SEO audits” rides along.

The practical shift is away from exact-match anchors. A branded or natural anchor wrapped in relevant copy is safer and often reads as more trustworthy than a keyword-stuffed one. Chaining links back to back strips that context out, which Google explicitly warns against.

It reaches past blue links too. An unlinked mention, your brand named next to a topic in an article, counts as co-occurrence, and that signal carries extra weight in AI answers that lean less on hyperlinks than classic search does.

How it affects your traffic

For link building this changes what a good placement looks like. A link from a page whose surrounding copy already mentions your target topics passes clearer relevance than a raw exact-match anchor dropped into unrelated text, and it carries less spam risk. When we build links, we place them inside context that co-occurs with the terms you want to rank for, and we chase unlinked brand mentions as well, since those same signals increasingly shape whether AI engines name you at all. That is the gap between links that move rankings and links that just sit there.
