Google evaluates quality at the site level, not just page by page. As John Mueller put it, “our quality algorithms do look at the website overall, so they do look at everything that’s indexed.” A site where a large share of indexed URLs are thin is judged differently from one where almost every page earns its place. Pruning shifts that ratio in your favor.

Prune, don’t just delete

Deletion is only one of four moves:

• Refresh a page that is outdated but still on-topic.
• Consolidate near-duplicates with a 301 redirect to kill cannibalization.
• Noindex pages that serve users but not search (thank-you pages, filtered listings) via <meta name="robots" content="noindex">.
• Remove dead weight with a 404/410, or 301 it to the closest live page.

One caution on noindex: the page must stay crawlable. If you also block it in robots.txt, Googlebot never sees the tag and the URL can still surface in results.

Work in staged batches, worst performers first, then wait a few weeks before the next pass. Benchmark traffic, rankings, and backlinks before you touch anything, so you can tell whether a cut helped or hurt. Keep any URL that holds real backlinks live or redirected. Pruning is not about a smaller site for its own sake; it is about crawl and ranking strength landing on pages that convert.
