conversion path
Also called: customer journey, attribution path, buyer's journey
A conversion path is the ordered sequence of touchpoints (channels, pages, and interactions) a person moves through before completing a conversion such as a purchase or form fill. It captures the whole journey, not just the last click that closed it.
From first touch to last click
A single conversion rarely comes from one visit. Someone might find you through an organic search, leave, see a Reddit thread, come back on a branded search, then convert from an email. Each of those is a touchpoint, and the ordered list of them is the conversion path. Google frames the related idea of attribution as “the act of assigning credit for important user actions to different ads, clicks, and factors along the user’s path to completing the action.”
In GA4 you read this in the Attribution paths report (the report Google previously labeled “Conversion paths”), under Advertising > Attribution. It groups touchpoints into early, mid, and late positions so you can see which channels open a journey versus close it. The attribution model you pick, data-driven by default in GA4, decides how credit gets split across those positions.
Why it matters for SEO: last-click reporting hides the assist. Organic search, and increasingly AI-search surfaces like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews, often sit early in the path. They introduce the brand, then a branded or direct visit takes the final credit. If you only score the closing click, you underrate the content that actually starts conversions and end up cutting the wrong pages.
Example: Organic search → Direct → Email → Convert. Last-click hands all the credit to Email. The path view shows organic did the first job.
How it affects your traffic
An SEO audit reads your conversion paths to separate organic pages that assist conversions from pages that only absorb traffic and stall. That tells you where to invest (the assisting content) and where friction is breaking the path (slow pages, weak internal links, dead-end articles). It also shows whether AI-search touchpoints appear early in your paths, which is the difference between guessing at GEO and measuring it.
