disavow

Also called: disavow links, disavow tool, disavow backlinks

To disavow is to ask Google, through Search Console's disavow links tool, to ignore specific inbound links (by URL or whole domain) when it assesses your site. It exists to neutralize spammy or manipulative backlinks tied to a manual action or a likely one, not for routine link cleanup.

When Google actually wants you to disavow

You upload a UTF-8 text file to Search Console with one entry per line, prefixing whole domains with domain: (for example, domain:spam-site.com). Google reprocesses those links over several weeks. But its own help doc calls this “an advanced feature” that “should only be used with caution,” warning that “if used incorrectly, this feature can potentially harm your site’s performance in Google Search results.” In most cases, Google says, it can judge which links to trust on its own, so most sites never need the tool.

The bar is two conditions together: a considerable number of spammy or artificial links, AND those links have caused, or likely will cause, a manual action. Absent a manual action or a history of building or buying manipulative links yourself, disavowing is usually wasted effort. Google’s spam systems already ignore the bulk of junk links automatically.

The common mistake is trusting third-party “toxicity” scores. Those tools flag ordinary links as dangerous, and owners disavow perfectly good links off false positives, quietly weakening their own profile. John Mueller’s line: “The disavow file is a tool, not a religion. Most sites don’t need it, but that’s not all sites.” Google has also signaled it may retire the tool eventually, though it stays live in 2026 with no removal date announced.

How it affects your traffic

Disavowing links you did not build is how sites accidentally cut their own rankings: you tell Google to ignore authority you earned, and organic traffic to those pages can soften over the weeks it takes to reprocess. The safer path is a proper backlink audit that separates genuinely self-built, scheme-style links (real disavow candidates) from links that only look scary inside a third-party tool. Our Link Building work focuses on editorially earned links that build durable authority and never land you on a disavow list in the first place.
