Editorial guidelines

Also called: editorial standards, editorial policy

Editorial guidelines are a site's documented standards for how content is researched, sourced, fact-checked, reviewed, and corrected. Published openly, they act as an E-E-A-T trust signal that helps readers and search systems judge whether the content is reliable.

What Google actually asks

Google does not rank a page for “having an editorial policy.” The lift is indirect. Its helpful-content guidance tells creators to make it “self-evident… who authored your content,” to show “clear sourcing,” to link to “an author page or a site’s About page,” and it asks whether content has “any easily-verified factual errors.” An editorial guidelines page answers those questions once, in public, for the whole site.

A useful page spells out who writes and who reviews, which sources count as credible, how claims get fact-checked, how often pages are refreshed, and how corrections are logged. On Google News surfaces the bar is higher: Google wants “clear dates and bylines,” “information about the authors, publication, and publisher,” and clear disclosure of sponsorship.

The same transparency travels into AI search. When AI Overviews, ChatGPT, or Perplexity pick sources to cite, named authors with credentials and visible sourcing make a page easier to trust and quote. YMYL topics (money, health, legal) draw the most scrutiny, so those pages gain the most from a documented process.

How it affects your traffic

Editorial guidelines feed straight into on-page trust signals. Bylines, author bios, cited sources, last-reviewed dates, and a linked policy are all page-level work, which is why they belong in an On-Page SEO engagement rather than a one-off content edit. On competitive and YMYL queries, that trust layer is often what separates a page that gets cited (in classic results and in AI answers) from one that gets skipped. Our On-Page SEO work builds these signals into page templates so every URL ships with them by default.
