Entity-based SEO
Also called: entity SEO, entity-first SEO, entity optimization
Entity-based SEO optimizes content around the people, places, things, and concepts that search engines store as distinct entities in a knowledge graph, and the relationships between them, rather than matching raw keyword strings. It helps search and AI engines recognize your brand as a defined thing.
Google introduced the Knowledge Graph in 2012 with the line “things, not strings,” a model that understands real-world entities and their relationships instead of reading a query as a bag of words. When someone searches “taj mahal,” Google decides whether they mean the monument, the musician, or the casino, then pulls facts tied to that specific entity. Entity-based SEO is the practice of making your brand, people, products, and topics legible to that system.
How you signal entities
You do not write for entities by stuffing keywords. You describe a thing clearly and connect it to references the graph already trusts. In practice that means:
- One canonical entity per page, with the title, H1, and copy all pointing at the same thing.
OrganizationorPersonJSON-LD carrying an@id, plussameAslinks to your Wikipedia, Wikidata (Q-ID), LinkedIn, and other profiles.- An “entity home,” usually your About page, that anchors who you are.
- Internal links with descriptive anchor text that spell out relationships between pages.
Example sameAs block:
"sameAs": [
"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q...",
"https://www.linkedin.com/company/..."
]
One note on expectations: the goal is graph recognition, not a Knowledge Panel. The panel is a visible byproduct that shows only when Google is confident an entity is well-defined and has real search demand. An entity can exist and feed rankings without ever triggering a panel.
How it affects your traffic
AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity lean on entity recognition to decide who gets named as a source, so a brand the graph does not understand tends to get skipped even when its pages rank in the classic blue links. Getting your Organization entity, sameAs profiles, and topical relationships set up correctly is what moves you from "a page that ranks" to "a source AI engines cite by name." That entity groundwork is the core of our AI SEO work.
