estimated traffic

Also called: traffic estimate, traffic estimation, estimated organic traffic

Estimated traffic is a modeled figure for how many organic visits a page or site likely receives, calculated by SEO tools from each ranking keyword's search volume multiplied by an assumed click-through rate for its position. It is a projection, not a measured count.

How the number is built

Every major SEO tool builds estimated traffic the same way. It collects the keywords a URL ranks for, then for each keyword multiplies the monthly search volume by a click-through rate assumed for that ranking position, and sums the results:

estimated traffic = Σ (search volume × CTR for position)

Ahrefs documents exactly this three-step process and labels the output an estimation, noting that not every variable in the formula can be fully accurate. Semrush’s Domain Analytics uses the same positions, volume, and CTR model, which is why it tells users to rely on their own analytics for their own site.

Two things keep the number soft. The CTR curve is a generic average, so a keyword sitting under an AI Overview, an image pack, or a stack of ads will not match it. And the tool only counts keywords already in its index, so long-tail and branded demand it never crawled is simply missing. Estimates and reality can drift far apart, especially on smaller sites.

Treat estimated traffic as a yardstick, not a fact. It is strong for sizing a competitor, ranking your own pages by potential, or catching a sudden drop. For your own site, Google Search Console reports actual measured clicks from Search, so use that for reporting, not a third-party model.

How it affects your traffic

Estimated traffic is the fastest way to see which pages carry your organic visibility and where competitors outrank you, but the raw number hides the why. An SEO audit connects the estimate to its real drivers: which keywords feed it, where clicks leak to AI Overviews or ads, and which high-potential pages the tool undercounts. We cross-check tool estimates against your Search Console clicks, so you act on measured gaps instead of modeled guesses.
