organic traffic

Also called: organic search traffic, unpaid search traffic, natural search traffic, SEO traffic

Organic traffic is the visitors who reach a site by clicking unpaid search listings, the free results a search engine shows because they match a query rather than because someone paid for placement. Analytics tools count a visit as organic when its medium is "organic" or its source is a known search engine.

Organic traffic sits opposite paid traffic. Google defines an organic result as “a free listing in Google Search that appears because it’s relevant to someone’s search terms,” while paid ads carry a “Sponsored” label. You cannot buy an organic position, you earn it through relevance, content, and links.

How analytics tools count it

Google Analytics files a visit under its Organic Search channel when the traffic’s medium is exactly organic, or when the source matches Google’s internal list of search engines (SOURCE_CATEGORY_SEARCH) such as Google, Bing, or DuckDuckGo. As of 2026, links from AI Overviews and AI Mode fall into that same organic channel, so a click from an AI answer still lands in your organic numbers.

Two things are easy to confuse:

The two rarely match exactly, because Search Console and GA4 measure at different points and deduplicate differently.

One more split worth watching: branded versus non-branded. A visitor searching your company name counts as organic too, but it reflects demand you already have, not new reach. Separating the two tells you whether SEO is growing your audience or just capturing people who were going to find you anyway.

How it affects your traffic

Organic traffic is the single line most SEO work gets judged on, but the raw count hides where growth actually comes from. An SEO consulting engagement starts by splitting branded from non-branded and mapping which pages and queries drive the sessions, so effort goes toward terms that bring in new buyers instead of people who already know you. As AI Overviews and AI Mode pull more clicks into the organic channel, tracking which pages get cited (not just ranked) becomes part of defending that traffic.
