Exact match anchor text is clickable link text identical to the keyword the destination page targets, such as an anchor reading "link building services" pointing to a link building page. Google reads anchor text as a relevance signal but treats a high ratio of exact-match anchors as a link-spam pattern.
How Google reads it
Google uses links to judge a page’s relevance and to find new pages to crawl, and it treats the anchor text as a description of the destination. Its own guidance says good anchor text is descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant, and warns you to “resist the urge to cram every keyword” because keyword stuffing breaks its spam policies.
Exact match is the extreme version of that cramming. A single link reading link building services to a link building page is fine and natural. The problem is ratio. When a large share of a page’s backlinks all use the same commercial keyword, the profile looks engineered rather than earned. Google’s spam policies flag “links with optimized anchor text in articles, guest posts, or press releases” and “forum comments with optimized links” as link spam. The Penguin update first punished this pattern, and those signals now sit inside Google’s core ranking systems.
The upside was never large. An Ahrefs study of 384,614 pages found only a weak correlation (Spearman 0.1436) between exact-match anchors and rankings. A natural profile mixes branded anchors (SEOBRO), bare URLs, generic text (“here”), partial matches, and only a thin slice of true exact match. The practical rule: earn links where the anchor emerges from real editorial context, and do not engineer the distribution.
