Fine-tuning is the process of taking a pretrained AI model and training it further on a smaller, task-specific dataset of example inputs and outputs, so it adapts to a particular domain, format, or behavior without being rebuilt from scratch.
Every large language model starts as a base (or foundation) model pretrained on a broad corpus. Fine-tuning continues that training on a curated set of labeled examples so the model absorbs a specific style, domain, or output format directly into its weights.
How it differs from prompting and retrieval
The most common flavor is supervised fine-tuning (SFT): you feed the model matched pairs, roughly {"input": prompt, "output": ideal answer}, and it learns to imitate them.
