Generative Engine Optimization

Also called: GEO, AI search optimization, generative search optimization, LLM search optimization

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content and entity signals so AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) cite or mention you when they generate answers. The term was coined in a 2023 academic paper that measured content edits lifting visibility up to 40%.

GEO comes from a November 2023 paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” by Pranjal Aggarwal, Vishvak Murahari and co-authors, later accepted to KDD 2024. They defined a generative engine as a search system that uses generative models “to gather and summarize information to answer user queries,” then built GEO-bench, a benchmark of queries across domains, to test which content changes get a source pulled into the answer.

The headline finding: small, content-side edits boosted a source’s visibility in generated answers by up to 40%. That shifts the goal. Classic SEO fights for a ranked blue link a user clicks. GEO fights to be the passage an LLM quotes or attributes inside the answer itself, often with no click at all.

What the engines actually do

Google’s own 2026 guidance says AI Overviews and AI Mode run on retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): the system retrieves pages from the existing Search index, then writes an answer grounded in them. Google’s blunt framing: “optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” So GEO is not a separate discipline bolted onto your site. It is SEO plus passage-level structure.

Practical GEO work looks like this:

Note the terminology is still unsettled. AEO, AIO, and LLMO overlap heavily with GEO, and no consensus definition separates them yet.

How it affects your traffic

AI answers increasingly resolve queries without a click, so a page that ranks but never gets cited quietly loses traffic that Search Console still logs as an impression. GEO recovers that demand by making your pages the source the model quotes, which also puts your brand name in front of buyers who never reach your site. For SEOBRO clients we track cited-domain and mention share across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews, then rebuild the pages that should be getting pulled but are not.
