focus keyword
Also called: focus keyphrase, main keyword, target keyword
A focus keyword (also called a focus keyphrase) is the single main search query a page is written and optimized to rank for. It guides the page's title, headings, and body copy, so one page targets one primary term.
The term comes from the Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress, which added a “focus keyphrase” field so writers could declare the one query a page targets and get an optimization check against it. That check is an editorial guide, not a ranking signal. Google never sees your focus keyphrase or your Yoast score, and it does not rank pages by counting how often a word appears.
Pick one, place it naturally
Choose a focus keyword by matching search intent, volume, and difficulty, then confirm no other page on your site already targets it (two pages chasing the same term compete with each other, a problem called keyword cannibalization). A phrase usually beats a single word: “gluten-free sourdough bread” is more specific and higher-intent than “bread.”
Once chosen, the focus keyword shapes the page. It belongs in the title tag, the URL slug, the first paragraph, at least one subhead, and the body where it reads naturally. What it should not do is appear everywhere. Google’s spam policies treat keyword stuffing (filling a page with repeated terms to manipulate rankings) as a violation. Modern search and AI answer engines understand synonyms, variations, and context, so a page that genuinely covers its topic will use the focus keyword and its relatives without forcing them. Treat the focus keyword as the page’s north star for topic, then write for the reader.
How it affects your traffic
On-page work starts with one clear focus keyword per page, because a page trying to rank for everything ranks for nothing. Getting the target right, and placing it in the title, the first paragraph, and a subhead, is what turns a published page into one that earns clicks. Our On-Page SEO service maps a single focus keyword to each page, kills cannibalization between pages fighting over the same term, and tunes the on-page signals so each page has a clean shot at ranking.
