keyword research
Also called: kw research, keyword discovery
Keyword research is the process of discovering, validating, and prioritizing the search terms your audience actually types into search engines, so you can decide which pages are worth building and how to shape each one around real demand and intent.
Keyword research turns a hunch about what people search for into a ranked list you can build against. You gather candidate terms from your own knowledge, competitor pages, Search Console queries, and keyword tools, then judge each one on a few signals.
What it actually involves
- Search volume: roughly how many people search a term per month.
- Keyword difficulty: how hard it will be to rank, based on who already ranks and their backlink strength.
- Intent: what the searcher wants, whether that is to learn, to compare, or to buy.
Volume on its own is a trap. Google’s SEO Starter Guide notes that people search the same idea in different words depending on how much they know: some type charcuterie, others type cheese board. It also points out that Google’s language systems already understand how a page relates to many queries even when you never use the exact terms, so writing for what readers actually want matters more than forcing an exact-match phrase onto the page.
The output is a mapping. Each target term (or cluster of related terms) is tied to one page, sorted by how closely it matches what you sell and how realistically you can rank for it. A lower-volume term that matches exactly what a buyer wants usually beats a big generic term that only half fits. Ahrefs frames the whole exercise as finding the keywords that make the most sense for your business, weighed against your specific circumstances, not just picking whatever looks easiest to rank for.
How it affects your traffic
Keyword research decides which pages you build and what each one is optimized around, so getting it wrong wastes every downstream hour of writing and linking. Target terms nobody searches and you earn no traffic. Target terms far above your site's authority and you sit on page five. Our On-Page SEO work starts here: we map real demand to the right pages, match each page to searcher intent, and prioritize terms you can actually win, so the traffic you gain is traffic that converts.
