footer link

Also called: sitewide footer link, sitewide link, footer backlink

A footer link is a hyperlink placed in a website's footer, usually repeated on every page (site-wide). Internal footer links aid navigation. External, widely distributed footer links (template or "website by" credits) count as link spam under Google's policy unless marked nofollow or sponsored.

A footer link’s SEO effect depends on where it points. Internal footer links (to your contact page, service pages, or privacy policy) are ordinary navigation. Google crawls them and they help distribute internal linking, though they sit far from the main content that carries the most context.

The risk is external footer links repeated across many sites. Google’s spam policy names “widely distributed links in the footers or templates of various sites” as an example of link spam. The classic cases are a “Website by [agency]” credit stamped on every client site, or a free WordPress template that hard-codes a link into every install. Google says these are acceptable only when qualified with rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored".

Anchor text is where footer links usually go wrong. Google wants anchor text that is “descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant.” A footer credit reading “cheap SEO services London” across 400 client sites is an obvious manipulation pattern. John Mueller has said the sitewide placement by itself is not automatically treated as unnatural; over-optimized anchor text is far more likely to cause a problem than the sitewide link.

Practical rule: use footer links for navigation and honest attribution, keep external ones nofollowed, and never stuff exact-match keywords into a credit link.

How it affects your traffic

If your link building leans on sitewide footer credits with keyword-rich anchors, you are building the exact pattern Google's spam policy flags, so those links pass little equity while raising risk. The links that actually move rankings and organic traffic are editorial, in-content links on relevant pages, not footer placements. A disciplined Link Building program earns those contextual links and replaces risky sitewide footer tactics, so your backlink profile reads as natural rather than templated.
