How query fan-out changes what ranks

Ask AI Mode something like “compare over-ear headphones under $200 with the best battery life” and Google does not run one search. It uses query fan-out: it breaks the question into sub-queries (specs, expert reviews, user complaints, price ranges) and runs them concurrently across the web index, the Knowledge Graph, and other data sources, then stitches the results into one answer with supporting links. Follow-up questions keep the thread, so a session behaves like a dialogue rather than ten blue links.

AI Mode is powered by Google’s Gemini models and runs on the same Search index and ranking systems as classic results. Google is explicit that there is no separate markup, feed, or “AI schema” to appear in it: meet the standard technical requirements, follow Search policies, and publish helpful, people-first content. What shifts is the payoff for depth. A page that answers one narrow facet cleanly is more likely to get pulled into a fan-out sub-query than a shallow page chasing a head term. Practitioner Aleyda Solis frames this as an “answer a facet” mindset: map the sub-questions around a topic and cover each one clearly, with headings and direct answers a model can lift.

By 2026 AI Mode had moved well past its early Labs-experiment origin. At Google I/O in May 2026 the company said it had surpassed one billion monthly users just a year after debut, so treating it as a fringe surface is a mistake.
