query fan-out
Also called: fan-out, fan-out queries, query fanout
Query fan-out is the technique Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews use to answer one prompt: instead of running a single search, the system breaks the question into many related sub-queries, runs them at once across subtopics and data sources, then synthesizes one answer.
How one question becomes many searches
When someone asks AI Mode a broad question, a language model interprets it and issues “a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf” (Google’s phrasing), each aimed at a different facet of the topic. Google’s own developer docs describe the same mechanism as “issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources” to develop a single response. Deep Search runs the method at larger scale, issuing hundreds of searches to build a cited report.
The sub-queries are not just paraphrases of your prompt. Practitioners group them into types: general discovery, entity-based, attribute-focused, comparative (Sony vs Bose), user-experience, and implicit factors like price or availability. Your page does not have to rank for the visible prompt. It has to be the best passage answering one or more of the hidden facets the model generated.
That shifts what “ranking” means. A single keyword-tuned page rarely covers every fanned-out angle. The sites that get pulled in tend to have a cluster of interconnected pages, each answering a specific subtopic in scannable form (clear headings, lists, direct answers the model can lift). Original data, firsthand experience, and clean entity coverage raise the odds of being cited in the synthesized answer.
Google is explicit that there is no separate “AI optimization” step. It states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page just has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Fan-out simply rewards genuine breadth of coverage over a single narrow target.
How it affects your traffic
If your growth depends on being cited inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, fan-out is the mechanism that decides whether you show up at all. One page built around one keyword can stay invisible while a competitor with deeper subtopic coverage gets pulled into several of the sub-queries behind the same prompt. Our AI SEO work maps the likely fan-out for your priority terms, then builds the passage-level, clustered coverage that earns citations across those hidden searches instead of chasing a single blue link on the main query.
